About Feng Shui

Literately translated Feng Shui means wind (feng) and water (shui).

In the old days, as well as today, mankind needed houses or villages that could protect them of strong winds (Thunderstorms, Tornadoes) and water (rain, flooding). At the same time the place also needed enough wind and water to guarantee a good harvest.

A well-selected location brings prosperity and good health, where as a bad location brings poverty and diseases. The task to select this location was up to a learned man whom his knowledge has been passed on over generations from father to son or from master to student.

In 6000 years many types of Feng-Shui have evolved. Some go hundreds or thousend of years back where others are new inventions and are considered new age Feng shui. All traditional types have two things in common! The use of forms and the use of a compass.

Some of the more popular Feng Shui schools are:

The form school

The eight mansion school

Flying Star (XUAN KONG) Feng Shui

The Black hat sect Feng Shui

Intuitive Feng Shui

Chinese Astrology (Four Pillars of Destiny) play also an important part in Feng Shui.

The Form school

A good form is a large mountain at the back of the house (in the North). Mountains to the East and some smaller mountains to the west. In the front open space, a lake or a slowly meandering river. Cold winds from the North are blocked and the house is protected. This form is close to an armchair.

The backrest is called the giant turtle.

The armrest in the east the green dragon.

The armrest in the West is the white tiger.

The open space in front is the red phoenix.

In a town, houses and streets substitute these forms. Also other structures around the house have to be taken into consideration. A street that runs straight onto the front door for example is very bad.

The eight mansion school

A Trigram is assign to every one of the eight main directions. This results in four differently good and four differently bad areas in a house. Every direction has so a different distribution of god and bad areas. But four of these directions have the god and bad areas in the same directions so that we get two main groups of houses. The west group and the east group.

Through a formula we calculate now the Ming Gua of every resident of the house. These are nine different numbers where as the number five is converted into a number between one and nine. This gives again eight areas which are identical with the 8 directions of the house. This way every person has also four good and four bad directions. Important rooms like sleeping room, kitchen and living room should be in the good area of a house and a person should face hers/his god directions. With the cycle of the five elements a harmonic Chi distribution is then provided.

This school is said to have its root in the advanced eight house school which divides the compass into 24 directions.

Flying Star (XUAN KONG) Feng Shui

This school is building up on the before mentioned schools but is going one-step further by implementing a time factor. It is also called the flying star school. When determining the location of a house the eight directions South, Southeast, East, Northeast, North, Northwest, West and Southwest are each subdivided into three sections with different Yin and Yang attributes. Together with the year of the construction we calculate the flying path of the nine different time stars. These stars are influenced by a nine by twenty years cycle. The annual star is giving furthermore the every year changing energies. To each of the nine time stars come two more stars where one is responsible for the health, and the other one is responsible for the wealth and career of the occupants of the house.

How these fortunate or unfortunate stars can be influenced depends also on the forms, mountains, rivers, houses, streets the house is surrounded by as well as the decoration inside the house. All these information are analysed according to the rules of the five elements and cures are advised. The Ming Gua of the residents are also taken into consideration.

Black hat sect Feng Shui

Thomas Lin Yun has developed this branch in the States. Tibetan Buddhism, Taoism and Feng Shui influence it. Every house is treated the same way. The house is divided into eight sections, life stations, starting from the front door. Cures are also given by the rules of the cycle of the five elements. A very easy to learn school which also explains the huge following this school gets.

Intuitive Feng Shui

Here the consultant acts on his/hers feelings or sense to harmonise a place. They do not follow any rules and even use many times rituals or psychology to get "results".

Every school has its merits. Every school claims to be successful. For me Flying Star Feng Shui works very well and in all my audits I concentrate on this school. If possible I will however blend the directions of the eight house school and advanced Water formulas in my audits. If a client feels happy with luck charms he might also use those.

Four Pillars of Destiny

There are Feng Shui Masters who use this type of chinese astrology to feng shui a house. It is however an indepentent system that should be used as an add on.

The theory behind Ba Zi (Four Pillars of Destiny) is that every newborn child gets his/hers destiny with the first breath it takes. The Qi at that precice moment will determine your future. Everybody has heard already of the expression of the year of the dragon or the year of the monkey. But in end these animals are only the branch of the Year pillar. It is only one eigth of once destiny. In addition the elements of the present year will affect you as well. The chinese time system of year, month, day and hour form Stem and Branch combinations. The branches are the 12 animals with theire 5 elemental structures and different yin and yang. The rat is water, the horse is fire for example.
The stems are one of the basic 5 elements with theire yin or yang attribute. The relationship these four pillars are standing to each other must be analysed to read once destiny. A Chinese astrology reading helps you to find out your weakness and strength and can guide you through your life.
